Bexley Council has urged its residents to reduce the amount of food they might waste by using two mobile apps.

It has highlighted the availability of Kitche and OLIO as part of its role in the Food Flagship initiative run by ReLondon, the partnership between the city’s mayor and boroughs to improve waste and resource management.

Kitche has been developed to help users reduce their food waste at home, and OLIO to connect neighbours with each other and local businesses to share surplus food. They are both available in the Apple Store and Google Play.

The council plans to measure the impact of the apps in reducing household waste over the next six months.

It said its research shows that, while its residents recycle 50% of their waste, 32% of their food is being thrown into their bins.

Environmental impact

Councillor Peter Craske, cabinet member for places, said: “Nobody wants to see good food go to waste. This exciting project will help us all think about our food waste and reduce our impact on the environment.

“I have downloaded these apps to ensure my family do everything we can to minimise our food waster and our carbon footprint.”

Bexley has been given a £40,000 grant to take part in the Food Flagship initiative to demonstrate how a circular economy for food can be achieved in London.
