BEIS plans digital service for buildings’ energy ratings

20/09/21

The Department for Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy (BEIS) is aiming to build a digital service for monitoring data on energy ratings in commercial buildings.

It has indicated that it wants to develop a system for performance based energy ratings to be generated and made public.

This would enable building owners, tenants, assessors, accreditation bodies and the public to get a clear picture of the energy efficiency of individual buildings.

BEIS has published a procurement notice for support in a discovery project with the intention of working towards running a pilot of the new system from April of next year.

This derives from the Government’s proposal to introduce a national performance based policy framework for rating the energy and carbon performance of commercial and industrial buildings covering more than 1,000 square metres.

This will lay the ground for benchmarking against other buildings and star rating system. Building owners and tenants will be required to obtain a rating annually and have it disclosed publicly online.

The move is intended to building awareness of and accountability for the use of energy.

BEIS has said the digital service will enable building owners, tenants and assessors to submit data and generate a rating. Assessors could also use it to upload site audit data, and the public will be able to check the rating of different businesses and building owners.

Update: Following the publication of this story BEIS withdrew the notice on the Digital Marketplace. It has been contacted for comment on the reasons why.
