AWE – the Atomic Weapons Establishment – has awarded Atos a contract to install new Spectra Logic TFinity tape libraries.
The installation is scheduled to run from this month to next March and is aimed at supporting AWE’s high performance computing (HPC) scientific research and removes the need for a fibre channel based infrastructure.
The new systems will be based on LTO8 and LTO9 (linear tape open) technology – based on an open standard alternative to proprietary tape formats – and utilise Spectra Logic’s Swarm technology, which
“High performance computing is a critical underpinning technology in the vast majority of our science based programme,” said Paul Tomlinson, HPC operations at AWE.
“Following a competitive tendering process, we are delighted to have selected Atos and Spectra Logic as our partners. AWE has had a successful relationship with Atos going back to 2008, and most recently installed a BullSequana x1000 supercomputer.
“These new Spectra Logic tape libraries provide more storage capacity in less space than our previous libraries.”
Strengthening research
Agnés Boudout, head of HPC at Atos, said: “The installation of this advanced data archive solution is designed to work in harmony with the existing supercomputing facilities delivered by Atos and will serve to strengthen further the capability of AWE to continually evolve technical understanding via its research based computation programmes.”
AWE is contracted to the Ministry of Defence to provide and maintain warheads for the UK’s nuclear deterrent through a ‘government owned contractor operated’ arrangement.
