The first phase of a project to install full fibre connectivity to public sector buildings in Aberdeenshire has been completed with implementations at 22 sites.
It is part of the Dark Fibre project as part of the Aberdeen City Region Deal (ACRD), the contract for which was awarded to SSE Enterprise Telecoms in March, and is ultimately planned to 190 sites in the region.
SSE said the next phase will involve installations on 41 sites just out from Aberdeen city centre by spring of next year.
The overall project covers 275km across the region, providing connectivity for buildings used by Aberdeenshire Council, NHS Grampian and Aberdeen City Council, and is scheduled to run into 2022.
Aberdeenshire Council leader, Councillor Andy Kille, said: “Any steps taken towards better connectivity for Aberdeenshire are hugely welcome and we all back the work taken to roll out this vital part of the City Region Deal project.
“The benefits of access to better digital services will have a lasting economic impact and will make a difference to businesses in Aberdeenshire. This will, in turn, benefit the people of Aberdeenshire more generally.”
The project is also aimed at increasing capacity for mobile operators and internet service providers, using parts of the network not harnessed by the public authorities, and involves the creation of a number of apprenticeships.
