As public authorities make ever more use of the cloud and look to move away from using the Public Services Network (PSN) they are going to need new solutions for managing their own networks.
Although there is no deadline for the change, it has taken on a higher profile with this month’s indication by the Government Digital Service that it has begun to work on identifying ways for organisations to move off of the PSN under its Future Networks for Government programme.
It first indicated in 2017 that the PSN would not be necessary in the long term because of improved standards around issues such as email security, transport security and virtual private networks. But this leaves open questions around how organisations will manage their networks, especially if they opt for multiple providers in a multi-cloud or hybrid cloud environment.
Some are already looking for the answers in the form of software defined wide area networks (SD-WANs), which have the ability to self-manage and simplify network infrastructure whilst powering up performance – without demanding a big investment in time and extra resource.
