Wrightington, Wigan and Leigh Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust (WWL) has set up a new online booking system for blood tests.

It has deployed the Dedalus Swiftqueue self-service appointment booking system, which it procured in March with funding from NHS Digital and began to use mid-May.

This has given patients the ability to book a test without calling the trust’s appointment centre.

In the first week more than 3,000 appointments were booked online and 8,400 by last week.

Covid-19 effect

Mary Fleming, WWL deputy chief executive, said: “As the trust’s previous ‘drop in’ service had to be stopped as part of our Covid-19 response, the number of calls to book blood tests had steadily increased to around 3,500 per week.

“This is the first WWL service to offer online booking, where patients can register and book or reschedule their own appointments. The phlebotomy team, health care operations team and project team have worked very hard to achieve such a quick and safe launch of this service – they should be very proud.”

The service has been implemented as part of the trust’s digital strategy.
