Sunderland City Council has launched an internet of things (IoT) and 5G accelerator programme as the latest step in its smart city campaign.

The council is running the programme with infrastructure provider BAI Communications and tech sector support organisation Sunderland Software City.

They said it will provide up to £10,000 of funding for each of 10 applications on projects to develop the technologies, with a flexible approach to their focus but likely to take in issues such as skills and education, manufacturing and smart homes.

The teams will take part in a structured series of workshops, mentoring sessions with experts, pitch development and training, and receive introductions and networking opportunities. The programme will culminate in a showcase event to demonstrate their progress.

Enviable position

Liz St Louis, assistant director smart cities at Sunderland City Council, said: “We are in the enviable position of being one of the few cities in the UK that is equipped to host this kind of programme. We can offer the infrastructure needed to support and accelerate the progress of a group of businesses with this type of expertise.

“The programme underlines Sunderland’s commitment to being a forward thinking and smart city.”

It will be open for applications from 4 July for teams based in the UK, and is scheduled to begin in September, with expressions of interest invited now.
